A natural gem in South Evia
Evia never stops surprising those who explore it. From its dramatic coastlines and deep gorges to the hidden springs that appear through the rocks, the island is full of landscapes that feel untouched and quietly magical. One of these treasures is the Kolethra Spring, a lush green oasis filled with cool water, life and serenity, an ideal choice for a short escape in South Evia.
Kolethra sits at an altitude of 123 meters, near Agios Vlasios, Lokas and Konistres, in an area known for some of the most fascinating natural environments on the island. The spring lies within a karstic landscape scattered with small springs and sinkholes, which explains the abundance of water gathered here.
Its waters come from Mount Mavrovouni rising to the west, bringing life to both the landscape and many of the surrounding villages, as the spring is an important source of fresh water.

A lovely recreation spot and a small nature trail
Just a few meters from the spring there is a quiet recreation area, perfect for resting beneath the shade of the trees. From here begins an easy 300 meter trail, following the gentle course of the water and allowing visitors to experience the landscape up close.
As you walk, you will see old stone channels that once guided the water to the nerotrivia, a traditional water mill that still stands at the end of the path. The walk is simple and suitable for everyone, especially families with children, since the trail is full of flowers, butterflies and small frogs that create a playful connection with nature.

The beauty of a natural habitat
Kolethra Spring feels like a small natural sanctuary. The vegetation surrounding the spring is rich and vibrant, with plane trees, poplars, strawberry trees, willows, kermes oaks and silver willows, while small chestnut groves grow across the nearby hills. The area is full of life, with dragonflies above the water, small fish gliding in the shallows and dozens of bird species that find shelter near the spring.

A unique highlight of the ecosystem is the endemic Evia chub, Squalius sp. Evia, a freshwater fish found nowhere else, making the spring an especially valuable natural habitat.
The water system and the Manikiatis River
In winter and spring, especially after heavy rainfall, Kolethra fills with water and creates a small natural lake. Its waters form a stream that flows south and then east, reaching the Manikiatis River after roughly 3 kilometers.
During summer the water level drops and the basin often reveals its rocky hollow, which reaches depths of up to 12 meters, giving the landscape a different but equally attractive character.
The underground cave of Kolethra
Kolethra Spring lies at the base of a tall rock formation, inside which there is an underground cave that has attracted the interest of specialized cave divers. Exploration so far has mapped around 1,240 meters of underwater passages, including four large chambers with heights of about 30 meters and widths of 50 meters.

This cave is not accessible to visitors, since conditions inside require professional experience and equipment. For travelers, the highlight remains the peaceful spring and the natural scenery that surrounds it.
Easy access, Kolethra is for everyone
Despite the wild beauty of its landscape, Kolethra Spring is very easy to reach. It is located right by the main road that connects Aliveri with the mountainous route toward Kymi, a scenic drive filled with traditional villages and changing natural scenery. The road is paved and brings visitors almost directly to the spring.
Parking is available right next to the entrance, and the short walk to the water is level and suitable for all ages, even for families with young children.
