The Byzantine Churches of Palaiochora
At the top of the hill stands the small chapel of Panagitsa, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. This single-aisled church dates back to the 11th or 12th century and was built upon the foundations of a pre-Christian temple,probably dedicated to Apollo, and next to the remains of a Neolithic settlement.

Their goal is to locate the famous Sanctuary of Amarysia Artemis,, one of the most important sanctuaries of ancient Eretria, well known from inscriptions and ancient texts.
Findings reveal continuous human presence from the 3rd millennium BC to Byzantine times. Among the most important discoveries is a 40-meter-long stoa from the Late Classical and Hellenistic periods, most likely part of the sanctuary.
The strong worship of Artemis in the area is also confirmed by architectural fragments and building remains. The fact that the Byzantine churches were built next to this sacred site highlights the timeless importance of the hill of Palaiochora through the centuries.
