A secluded beach of wild beauty in South Evia, reached along a remarkable route through history, legend and Aegean landscapes
On the wild eastern coast of South Evia, in the region of Cape Kafireas and the legendary Cavo Doro, lies one of the most distinctive and secluded beaches in the wider Karystos area.
Archampoli Beach, near Karystos, is not a destination you can simply reach by car. To discover it, you have to seek it out.
The route crosses a rugged and imposing landscape, passing rocky slopes, traces of ancient human presence and the deep blue of the Aegean. At the end of the trail, the gorge suddenly opens onto a small cove with turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs.

The hike from Thymi to Archampoli
The most characteristic route to the beach begins near the village of Thymi, in the Cape Kafireas region.
The old trail leading to Archampoli is approximately 1,750 metres long and, according to the official signage installed by the Municipality of Karystos, is classified as a low-difficulty route. The descent takes around 40 minutes, depending on your pace, and follows an impressive trail overlooking the Aegean.
The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as you approach the sea, until the gorge finally opens to reveal Archampoli.
The trail crosses the characteristic wild terrain of Cavo Doro, with bare rock formations, steep slopes and beautiful views across the Aegean.
Some sections are steep and require care, so suitable footwear and a basic level of hiking confidence are recommended.
Archampoli Gorge
Sheer cliffs, small caves and striking geological formations create a wild landscape that descends directly into the Aegean.
The area is home to rare cliff-dwelling and endemic plants, as well as numerous bird species. According to the Municipality of Karystos information board, a seal has even been observed inside the area’s sea caves during quieter periods.
At the end of this natural passage lies Archampoli Beach.
A beach hidden among the cliffs
The first view of Archampoli is one that is difficult to forget.
A small open bay, waters shifting from deep blue to vivid turquoise, and immense rock formations embracing the shoreline.
The beach remains completely untouched and unorganised, with no beach bars, sun loungers or other facilities. Its beauty lies precisely in this raw, unspoilt character.
Despite the relatively enclosed cove, this is Cavo Doro, where conditions in the Aegean can change quickly. On days with strong winds, the sea can become rough, making it essential to check the weather forecast before visiting.
The Chapel of Agios Georgios
Above the beach stands the small chapel of Agios Georgios, one of Archampoli’s most distinctive landmarks.
Its simple form, set among the rocks and overlooking the Aegean, adds to the unique atmosphere of the landscape.
The exact date of its construction has not been adequately documented. Today, the chapel shows considerable signs of deterioration, and local efforts have been made to preserve and restore it.
The ruins of ancient Archampoli
Archampoli is more than an impressive natural destination. It is also an important archaeological site in South Evia.
The remains of an organised ancient settlement can still be found in the area, including houses, roads, fortifications and a metallurgical workshop. Large quantities of ancient slag remain visible on one of the surrounding slopes, evidence of the metalworking activity that once developed here.
As you walk towards the beach, you are not simply passing through a gorge. You are crossing a landscape where nature and the traces of an ancient settlement continue to coexist.
The settlement’s ancient name remains unknown, another detail that adds to the mystery surrounding Archampoli’s history.
Pirates, legends and mystery
Archampoli has long been associated with stories and local legends.
One theory suggests that the ancient settlement was abandoned abruptly, possibly following a natural disaster, an invasion or even a pirate attack.
Over time, stories emerged of a settlement that suddenly disappeared and inhabitants who never returned.
These accounts are not supported by conclusive historical evidence. Yet, surrounded by Archampoli’s otherworldly landscape, it is easy to understand how such legends were born.
What to bring with you
Archampoli’s isolation is part of its appeal, but it also means that you must arrive fully prepared.
Bring with you:
- plenty of drinking water,
- food or snacks,
- a hat and sunscreen,
- suitable hiking shoes,
- a fully charged mobile phone,
- and ideally an offline map of the route.
During summer, the heat and limited shade make the return hike particularly demanding.
Check the weather and wind conditions before setting out, and make sure you do not leave the return journey until after sunset.
