Chalkida in Evia: The Perfect One-Day Getaway from Athens

Built on both sides of the Euripus Strait, Chalkida stands half in Central Greece and half in Evia island, becoming a crossroads of cultures, of land and sea, of traditional and contemporary vibes.

In the capital of Evia, nature has chosen to unfold a unique tidal phenomenon. The waters change direction every six hours, remaining stationary for about ten minutes in between. This unique phenomenon can be observed from the city center, at the Evripos Strait, to which the locals also attribute its name, referring to it as the Evripos tides.

The "crazy waters ", rich history, and beauties have inspired songwriters and poets, with Yiannis Skaribas holding a special place among them, as he identified with the city for which he wrote passionately.

Chalkida has been a favorite vacation destination for Athens escapades for years, and not without reason. Just an hour away from the capital, the city offers modern tourist infrastructure that suits all preferences and budgets, numerous Accomodation, amazing fish taverns and restaurants, as well as nightlife  that is second to none compared to that of the capital.

Above all, however, Chalkida offers its visitors numerous opportunities for strolls, activities, and adventurous excursions. So, get in the right mood and wander through its old alleys, watch the waters of the Evripos on the old bridge, and enjoy your evening walk on the bustling, cosmopolitan coastal promenade.

History lovers have a multitude of options: from the Archaeological and Folklore Museum, the Roman Baths, the Ancient Agora, and the Ottoman buildings, to its beautiful mansions, Chalkida will enchant you and surely bring you back to its waters, as one visit is never enough.

Timeless Maritime and Historical Center

With its history beginning in the Paleolithic era, Chalkida emerged as a powerful naval force in antiquity, establishing colonies within and beyond the Greek mainland.

Beyond trade, the inhabitants of the area developed a tradition in metallurgy early on, from which the city took its name (Chalcis from copper), according to the prevailing opinion.

Chalkida experienced significant development during the Mycenaean times, won the Lelantine War against Eretria in the late 8th century BC, actively participated in the campaign against the Persians in the naval battles of Artemisio, Salamis, and in the Battle of Plataea, while it served as an important naval base during the Peloponnesian War.

The attempt to withdraw from the First Athenian League and its subjugation by the Athenians led to a period of turmoil and marginalization, while under Roman rule the city was re-founded, experiencing remarkable development again, which it would maintain in the years to follow.

During the Venetian rule, Chalkida (called Negroponte) was the seat of the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople.

In the Ottoman period (when the city was called Egriboz), it was a significant base of the Turkish fleet and the seat for the strongest pashalik of Evia, the pashalik of Euripus. The city was liberated in April 1833.

Chalkida: The Gateway to the Beautiful Villages and Beaches of Evia

Built in the middle of Evia, Chalkida serves as an ideal starting point for your excursions to the North and South of the island.

There are many excellent destinations near Chalkida for excursions, where one can enjoy swimming in the beautiful beaches, entertainment, and food in picturesque seaside taverns.

swimming in the beautiful beaches, entertainment, and food in picturesque seaside taverns. To the North, Nea Artaki, Politika, and the magical beach of Dafni offer unique experiences. To the South, you can enjoy fresh fish in the touristy Lefkandi, Mpourtzi, and Nea Lampsakos.

For those who prefer a getaway to the mountains, Steni village on the mountain of Dirfys, the popular picturesque alpine village of Evia, offers a unique experience in natural beauty and traditional hospitality.

Traditional taverns offer delicious dishes with local products, while atmospheric cafes and guesthouses provide the opportunity for relaxation and enjoyment of the landscape's tranquility.

Using Steni as a base, you can visit the uniquely beautiful beaches of the Aegean in central Evia, such as Chiliadou and Metochi. There, you can also discover picturesque little villages like Kampia with the magical location of the church of Agia Kyriaki, Agios Athanasios with its gorge, Stropones, and Metochi.

However, do not miss visiting the beautiful villages located in the mainland part of central Greece, such as Agios Minas, a picturesque seaside settlement built on the eponymous bay, with modern tourist infrastructure, excellent fish taverns, and ouzo taverns, just 3 kilometers from the old bridge.

To the east, Drosia is built on a fertile plain and surrounded by beautiful beaches at a short distance, which are worth your attention. To the South, the mythologically known Avlida is a popular tourist destination, known for its shallow-water beach but also the multitude of options for accommodation, food, and entertainment.

The attractions you must not miss

Chalkida, on the island of Evia, is a destination full of culture and history, with many attractions worth exploring. Let's take a look at some of them:

The Old Bridge of Chalkida and the tidal phenomenon of the Evripos with its "crazy waters"

The Old Bridge of Chalkida

The old bridge of Chalkida is an architectural and mechanical landmark that represents the pioneering thinking and inventiveness of Greece. As the world's first sliding bridge, it has become a symbol of technological innovation and historical significance.

The bridge spanning the Evripos Strait provides distinctive visual delights, including the sight of the "crazy waters" phenomenon,  chances for capturing graphic photographs against the lively city promenade backdrop, and the excitement of canoe and kayak racing events.

However, the most impressive event is the opening of the bridge for the passage of sailboats and other large vessels, a spectacle that captivates and leaves an indelible impression on visitors.

Historical data reveal the construction of the sliding bridge in late 1959, as a response to the need for a new structure due to the obsolescence of the previous "Italian" bridge.

Its history begins centuries ago, with the first recording of a bridge over Evripos dating back to the late 5th century BC, maintaining its strategic and economic significance throughout the centuries.

Over time, the bridge has undergone multiple changes, transformations, and renovations, responding to the technological and social developments of each era.

Its enduring presence as a connector between the two shores and its contribution to the development of the local and national economy seal its value as a pivotal and emblematic point of Chalkida and the wider area.

For this reason, the Chalkida bridge is not just an engineering and architectural work. It is a symbol of cultural heritage and technological innovation, a bridge that unites history with the future, and highlights the resilience, adaptability, and perspective of Greek society and technology.

The "crazy waters" of Evripos and Chalkida

Those who have visited the Strait of Evripos in Chalkida have surely heard of the unique phenomenon of the "crazy waters" of Euripus that change direction every 6 hours!

The famous "crazy waters" of Evripos in Chalkida are called exactly that because of their movement that seems... crazy. Specifically, they change direction every 6 hours!

The waters of this channel, which is 39 meters wide and 40 meters long, change direction every six hours, moving one towards the North and one towards the South.

This tidal wave is generated by the attraction of the Moon in the Eastern Mediterranean and moves westward. Additionally, the wave entering the southern Evian Gulf reaches the Evripos Strait 1 hour and 15 minutes earlier than the wave coming from the north. And this, of course, is because the route it follows is shorter.

And somewhere around here, the phenomenon of the tide and the crazy waters begins to become visible. Specifically, most water volumes arrive from the south earlier due to the distance, resulting in raising the level in that area by about 30 to 40 centimeters.

Thus, a current is created from the south to the north. Even if someone finds it difficult to understand, when they are there to admire it at the moment of change, the result is truly extremely impressive and worth the effort.
